Supply Chain to Data Science: How I Made the Leap into a Tech-Driven Career Easily

Hello everyone, My name is Md. Amir, I have curved my career in Data Science after having a 3 years gap. In this blog, I want to share my journey from a supply chain executive (Delhivery) to a data analyst (VLCC). So this was the time of pre-COVID when I completed my graduation degree and joined Delhivery as a supply chain executive. I started my career from there. I completed my training, my probation period and I became a permanent employee of Delhivery.

Now we are talking about Dec 2019, when the pandemic hit the world. There was no job to do at the office then the company started laying off the staff gradually and in March 2020 I lost my job in the layoff.
I came back to my hometown and got involved in my family business with my father and due to my father’s declining health I had to stay with my family and support them therefore even I did not look for a job.

The very next year we had another wave of COVID and lockdown and in this way 3 years passed away. Now my father got healthier day by day and started handling his business and I was free to do anything in my career.

I started looking for a job as per my last experience and my degree but sadly the times had changed and I faced many rejections due to my career gap and lack of skills in the latest tools and technologies. This was the time when a new market was developing by the name of Data science. I had a little interest in the IT field but programming scared me a lot since childhood still I was enquiring about data science and the courses offered by different companies.

Then I came to know about Console Flare through a Facebook ad. I filled out the form and got a call from one of their counselors. In the very first interaction with the counselor, the counselor was very patient and heard everything about my studies and my job.

After that, he offered to attend a free workshop on data science which was conducted by one of the senior data analysts/trainers. In that workshop, I was guided by a roadmap like what is data science, why this market is in so much demand, why there are several opportunities in this field, and how I can create my career in this field.

The workshop was more focused on what to learn rather than learning everything. In this workshop, they explained every tool and technology like Python, data analytics libraries (numpy, pandas, matplotlib, seaborn), SQL, PowerBI, Pyspark, Databricks, Scikitlearn, etc, and after explaining everything they resolved all my doubts and the other participants in the workshop. It was a completely interactive session where I could ask any question from my trainer at any point in time.

What Is Data Science In Simple Words?

After that, I enrolled in their Masters in Data Science program.

  1. First Module (Python): In the first module, I was trained in Python as Python is a programming language and foundation for all the profiles in the data science field. Here I learned about the concepts of data structures, branching, functions, and file handling. Every concept was explained in the easiest way possible and connecting it with the real-life scenarios with the help of projects.

2. Second Module(Data Analytics): In this module, I learned the concepts of statistical calculations through numpy, data manipulation techniques from Pandas, and data visualization through Matplotlib and Seaborn. Along with that I learned how to use the DateTime module, random module, and Streamlit library to create web applications.

3. SQL(Structured Query Language): It is another language that can be used for data analysis but this language can analyze structured data only that’s why we prefer for analyzing the data but now the question is then why I have covered SQL. The reason is SQL is used to fetch data from one server to another server or vice-versa which helps us in analyzing data that is stored in our client’s server.

4. PowerBI: It is a client-side tool developed by Microsoft for real-time data visualization. With the help of PowerBI, we can create real-time interactive dashboards that generate reports on real-time data. It is like a client does not need to know any programming language to understand the reports based on the data.

5. Pyspark-Databricks: Suppose you have to analyze data that is 100 GB or more in size, you can not open this data on your regular laptop, or your laptop gets stuck in opening such data. In this scenario, we move to Big Data. In Big data, we store our data in cloud platforms in a distributed network of computers (up to 6000 computers are available) and this technology is called Pyspark to handle analysis on Pyspark technology we use a platform called Databricks that helps us to handle Pyspark. A big data analyst is also called a Pyspark Developer.

6. Machine Learning: In this module, we cover a Python library called Scikit Learn. It helps us in making predictions on behalf of the older data. We train our computer by feeding data and the machine learns from that data and starts predicting.

After completing all the modules, Console Flare started placement assistance sessions, here they guided us in how to optimize our LinkedIn profile and resume, how to showcase our projects, how to target companies, and what approach we need to follow in applying for jobs.

After that I applied to many companies on a daily basis, few of the companies ever called me or I was not skilled enough to crack their interview but then I applied to VLCC for the role of data analyst. They liked my profile and my skillsets completely aligned with their requirements. I had 4 rounds of the selection process and then at last I grabbed my first job as a data analyst.

During the process, Console Flare guided me before every step like how to approach, where I needed to pay more attention, and what questions I could be asked during the interview, and in the end I bagged the job.
